DIY Internal Window Shutters: Tips for Measuring

Installing DIY internal window shutters is one of those projects that can completely transform your space. Precise measurements ensure the fit of your shutters so they operate smoothly. Here are a few easy tips for measuring internal windows for shutters with confidence:

1. Have Your Tools Ready
You won’t need much, but accuracy is key - tools to have on hand:

  • A steel tape measure as a minimum or laser measurer
  • Somewhere ready to take notes, pencil and paper or device
  • Someone to give you a hand for anything tricky like a large, tall window or door
  • Shutter measurements are always supplied width x height and in millimetres for accuracy. Jump over to our price calculator for an example.

Take your time and measure at least twice — at the top and bottom across the window width (horizontally) and then the same for the height (vertically) - it’s always better to be sure. Jot down both measurements.

As sometimes not every window is perfectly square — especially in older homes,
we need the smallest width and the smallest height measurements. It may become problematic if the supplied sizes aren’t the smallest as the shutters won’t fit.

2.  There are two main ways to fit internal shutters depending on your circumstances. We can help with the best option and may ask for additional info.

Inside Mount (Recess Fit)
This fit sits inside the window recess for a clean, built-in appearance.
✅ Ideal for: windows with adequate recesses.

Outside Mount (Face Fit)
This fit is mounted on top of the wall or window architrave, covering the entire opening.
✅ Ideal for: shallow/no recesses or if the opening is badly out of square.

5. Keep an Eye Out for Obstructions
Before finalising your measurements, inspect the window area for any obstacles, such as:

  • Handles, locks, or cranks
  • Tiling around the frame

Also please take a note of anything like this and let us know too.

6. Double-Check
Once you’ve recorded all your measurements:

  • Review each one carefully
  • Label clearly which window the measurements belong to. The window name will be included to the quote and additionally the shutter box so it helps takes the guess work out of figuring out what shutter goes where at the time of installation.

A few extra minutes of double-checking now can save hours of frustration later!
